Open Source Testing launches community donations programme

Open Source Testing has launched a community donations programme. The first recipients of $100 donations are load testing tool Curl-loader, which recently celebrated a successful first year of development, and a popular defect tracking old-timer, Bugzilla.

So what’s behind all of this? Well, during 2007 Open Source Testing has begun to generate fairly regular revenue. It has always been my aim, should the site become commercially viable, to put some profits back into the open source community. I will be aiming to make bi-monthly donations (funds providing) to open source testing projects and open source organisations of my own choosing. The donations will not be earth shattering, but whether they cover hosting and hardware costs, contractor costs, publicity, trips to events or just some extra motivation, they will certainly make a difference.

Here are some details on how these two particular projects will be spending the money.

- Bugzilla donations help to pay for project expenses such as registration fees at trade shows, bug bounties and other project needs.

- Curl-Loader have requested that this donation is given a bonus to Michael Moser for his work on a new scripting language for HTTP/FTP response body analyses. This is normally achieved using JavaScript, which occupies a total thread, is blocking and is bad for performance. However, Curl-Loader have lofty ambitions - to deliver an open-source alternative to Spirent Avalanche and IXIA IxLoad - and Michael’s new language will make real advances in their ability to efficiently simulate tens of thousands of users with their own IP address.

Open Source Testing site update

I have rewritten the About This Site section which now has the latest information on site usage (we broke through the 100,000 unique users per month barrier, would you believe!), information about advertising on the site, and an updated biog with links to some of my published papers and resumé.

Fighting spam on opensourcetesting.org

I have improved the anti-spam protection on the website forums. There were several users who felt awkward forwarding the site to their managers when trying to present a case for adoption of open source testing tools within their businesses. Obviously this kind of defeats the purpose of the site so I’ve made it a priority to improve the anti-spam techniques used. The most important change is that all new posts now require visual confirmation. For full details please follow the link.

RSS feeds update

Both RSS feeds have been merged into rss_news.php - this feed now features all new tools added to the site, general site news, community news and tool updates. Please ensure your RSS reader point to rss_news.php, as rss_tools.php will be discontinued at the end of September.

Discussion forum spamming

Apologies for any obscene content on the discussion forums, I am trying various methods of stopping this but these spambots are getting ever more intelligent. Until I find a solution that works (and there are quite a few more weapons in my arsenal yet!) I am checking several times daily and deleting inappropriate posts manually.

The project activity and download data on this site have been temporarily suspended due to problems with the RSS feeds from Sourceforge, this may be due to maintenance work on Sourceforge or some impact of their site’s redesign. As soon as the issue is resolved the feeds will be reactivated.
