I have no experience in Automated Load & Stress testing but we need to perform Load and stress testing on an application that will have >100 users.
The windows application is built on .Net and the web version is also coded in .Net and then published as HTML by the framework.

Could anyone make a suggestion as to what tools would be best suited to this?

We use JMeter for load and performance tests. For me it is the best free (and open source) test tool. It is no problem to generate tests with 500 or more “virtual” users.

JMeter is suitable for Web apps. You can do FTP-, HTTP-, LDAP-, SOAP/XML-RPC- and JDBC-requests. JMeter is not for testing Richclient apps (Windows-application like Adobe Reader or other).
